How much whitewater?
The Grande Ronde is Class II to III and the Deschutes Class III. The Rogue is Class III+, and the Gates of Lodore and Hells Canyon have Class III and IV rapids. The Upper Klamath, Westwater and Cataract are the biggest water here.
Whitewater classes explainedWhen can you go?
The John Day runs from May to early July and the Grande Ronde from March to July. The Rogue and Hells Canyon run April to October, and the Deschutes year round.
Best time to go raftingLottery river or not?
The Rogue, Hells Canyon, the Lodore and the Grand Canyon ration private trips by lottery. A guided trip books like any trip, so these are the places a 3 day guided trip saves the most planning.

What is a 3 day rafting trip?
Three days on the river and two nights at riverside camps. Guides run the boats and cook the meals. On the Rogue some trips stay at riverside lodges instead: ROW's 3 day, 2 night Rogue trip is a lodge trip.

Can you raft the Grand Canyon in 3 days?
Part of it. Western River Expeditions lists a 3 day, 2 night motor trip from $2,015 (2026), and Colorado River & Trail Expeditions a 3 day, 2 night ranch and raft trip from $2,080. Full canyon trips take far longer, up to 18 days. See Grand Canyon rafting trips.
Can kids go on a 3 day rafting trip?
Yes. The youngest listed minimum age is 3, with Arrowhead on the John Day. OARS and Tributary take kids from 4 on the Klamath, and Winding Waters from 5 on the Grande Ronde. Hells Canyon and Lodore outfitters raise ages at high water.
Is 3 days enough for the Rogue?
Many outfitters run the Wild and Scenic Rogue, about 34 to 36 miles from Grave Creek to Foster Bar, in 3 days and 2 nights; others take 4 or 5 days at a slower pace.
Do I need a permit?
No. The outfitter holds the permit. The Rogue, Hells Canyon, the Gates of Lodore and the Grand Canyon ration private trips by lottery, and a guided trip skips it. See the lottery calendar.
What should I pack for two nights?
Quick drying layers, a warm layer for the evening, a rain jacket, river shoes and camp shoes, sunscreen and a headlamp. Most outfitters supply or rent the camp gear. See what to pack.
