Lodore and the Yampa: skip the Dinosaur lottery

Private trips on the Gates of Lodore and the Yampa need a permit from Dinosaur National Monument's high use lottery, which takes applications December 1 to January 31. On the Yampa, the lottery season covers nearly the whole runnable season.

Outfitters hold their own permits, so a guided trip books like any trip. Colorado's other overnight rivers have no lottery: the Gunnison Gorge needs a BLM wilderness permit from the trailhead, and Ruby-Horsethief camps are reserved on Recreation.gov.

Dec 1 is when the Dinosaur lottery opens for private Lodore and Yampa permits. Guided trips skip it.
