Grand Canyon motor vs oar: which rafting trip to choose

Motor trips see the canyon in a week. Oar and dory trips take two. Here is how they compare, outfitter by outfitter.

Quick answer

A Grand Canyon motor trip covers the full canyon in about 7 to 10 days and runs from April 1 to September 15. An oar or dory trip takes about 12 to 18 days, is quieter and runs April to October. Motor trips often take kids from 8 or 9; many oar trips set 12. Full canyon motor trips usually cost less.

Which suits you

How to choose between motor and oar

Pick motor if time is short. A motor trip reaches the end of the canyon in about a week, so it fits a normal vacation. Western runs every trip on motor rigs, from 3 to 7 days.

Pick oar if you want the slow version. More days on the river means more time in camp and on side hikes, with no engine running. Canyon Explorations, OARS and Outdoors Unlimited run no motor trips.

Pick a dory for a few guests per boat. OARS says its Grand Canyon dories carry four guests each, rowed by a guide.

Check the month. Motors stop on September 15. A late September or October trip is an oar trip.

Questions

Motor vs oar questions

Is a motor or oar trip better in the Grand Canyon?

It depends on your time and what you want. Motor trips cover the canyon faster, at least 7 days to Diamond Creek per the Park Service. Oar and dory trips take about 12 to 18 days for the full canyon, with no engine noise and more days on the river.

How long is a motor trip through the Grand Canyon?

Full canyon motor trips run about 7 to 10 days on outfitters' sites. Hatch lists 7 days, Grand Canyon Expeditions 8 or 9 days to Pearce Ferry and Arizona Raft Adventures 8 or 10. Shorter motor trips cover part of the canyon in 3 to 6 days.

How long is an oar trip through the Grand Canyon?

About 12 to 18 days for the full canyon. Canyon Explorations lists 13 to 16 days, Arizona Raft Adventures 14 to 16 and OARS up to 18. Upper and lower canyon oar trips run 5 to 10 days.

When can you take a motor trip?

From April 1 to September 15, under the park's 2006 Colorado River Management Plan. From September 16 to March 31, no motors are allowed.

Which is cheaper, motor or oar?

For the full canyon, motor trips usually cost less because they are shorter: Hatch lists 7 days by motor from $3,677 (2026), while OARS lists full canyon oar and dory trips from $8,599 to $9,999. Short upper canyon oar trips start lower, from $2,735 with Outdoors Unlimited (2027).

Can kids go on either?

Motor trips often take younger kids: Grand Canyon Expeditions and Hatch from 8, Western from 9 on 3 and 4 day trips. Many oar trips set 12, and CRATE sets 14 on rowing and paddle trips.

What is a dory?

A rigid boat a guide rows. OARS, which runs dories as Grand Canyon Dories, says each is built for four guests. See dory trips.

Do I need a permit for either?

No. Commercial trips run on the outfitter's park contract, so you book a seat directly. The park's lottery is for private trips. See the lottery calendar.
