How to choose

How to choose a 2 day, 1 night trip

How much whitewater?

The Deschutes is Class III. Westwater packs rapids up to Class IV into 17 miles, and Cataract runs Class III to V. The Upper Klamath overnight run is Class IV+, and Barker's 2 day Lower Salmon trip runs Slide Rapid, which the BLM says can reach Class V at high flows.

Whitewater classes explained

Where are you starting?

The Deschutes and the Klamath are in Oregon, and the Klamath crosses into California. Westwater and Cataract are on the Colorado River in Utah, and the Lower Salmon is in Idaho, ending at the Snake.

Who is coming?

Kids from 4 can go with some Deschutes and Klamath outfitters. Westwater and Cataract trips start at 8 to 14, and some outfitters raise the age to 16 at high water.

Questions

2 day rafting trip questions

What is a 2 day rafting trip?

Two days on the river with one night at a riverside camp. Guides run the boats and cook the meals, and most outfitters we checked supply tents or rent them; you bring your clothes and personal gear. On the Klamath, Indigo Creek's 2 day, 1 night trip spends its night at a lodge instead.

Where can I go on a 2 day rafting trip?

On the rivers we compare, outfitters list priced 2 day, 1 night trips on the Klamath, the Deschutes, Westwater Canyon, Cataract Canyon and the Lower Salmon. Westwater has the most, with 8 outfitters.

How much does a 2 day rafting trip cost?

The lowest listed prices are $399, from Ironhead on the Klamath (with a $1,200 group minimum) and World Wide on Westwater (which camps outside the canyon). The middle of all 25 prices is $600, and the highest is $1,399 for Sheri Griffith's Cataract trip, which includes a scenic flight. Prices checked September 2026.

Can kids go on a 2 day rafting trip?

Yes, on some rivers. The youngest listed minimum age is 4, with River Drifters on the Deschutes and High Country Expeditions on the Klamath (it says the age can vary). Imperial and Ouzel on the Deschutes take kids from 6 who weigh 50 pounds. Westwater trips list 8 to 14, and Cataract trips 10 to 12, rising to 14 or 16 at high water with some outfitters.

Is 2 days long enough for Cataract Canyon?

Outfitters make it fit by covering distance faster: Adrift's 2 day Express uses a jet boat leg, Mild to Wild's runs on motor rafts, and Sheri Griffith's includes a scenic flight. Longer Cataract trips run up to 6 or 7 days.

Do I need rafting experience?

No, on most trips. ROW says first time rafters are always welcome, and guides run the boats. On paddle trips you paddle with a guide steering. See your first overnight rafting trip.

Do I need a permit?

No. The outfitter holds the permit. None of these five rivers uses a lottery for private trips, and River Drifters on the Deschutes lists the Boater Pass on top of its price.

What should I pack for one night?

Less than you think. Outfitters supply the boats, life jackets, meals and usually the camp gear. Bring quick drying layers, a rain jacket, river shoes, sunscreen and a headlamp. See what to pack.
