Grand Canyon motor vs oar: which rafting trip to choose
Motor trips see the canyon in a week. Oar and dory trips take two. Here is how they compare, outfitter by outfitter.
Quick answer
A Grand Canyon motor trip covers the full canyon in about 7 to 10 days and runs from April 1 to September 15. An oar or dory trip takes about 12 to 18 days, is quieter and runs April to October. Motor trips often take kids from 8 or 9; many oar trips set 12. Full canyon motor trips usually cost less.

Which suits you
How to choose between motor and oar
Pick motor if time is short. A motor trip reaches the end of the canyon in about a week, so it fits a normal vacation. Western runs every trip on motor rigs, from 3 to 7 days.
Pick oar if you want the slow version. More days on the river means more time in camp and on side hikes, with no engine running. Canyon Explorations, OARS and Outdoors Unlimited run no motor trips.
Pick a dory for a few guests per boat. OARS says its Grand Canyon dories carry four guests each, rowed by a guide.
Check the month. Motors stop on September 15. A late September or October trip is an oar trip.
